There are more than 110 Confucius Institutes in the world. Their purpose is to let people to study the Chinese Language and explore Chinese culture. And now the deans of the institutes are gathered in Shanghai for a seminar to explore how to better present Chinese culture.
A grand cultural event taking place in Shanghai! The seminar took place in Fudan University. 62 deans of Confucius Institutes from 28 countries took part. Many of these institutes are partnered with well-established universities abroad.
Mark Cranshaw, Dean of Confucius Inst., The University of Southampton, said, "I came to China and became fascinated with the culture a long time ago, I think Confucius is a prime symbol of Chinese culture."
This event is only the first part of a four-part curriculum. It will last ten days and will provide comprehensive training to sharpen the skills of the participants.
Xu Lin, Executive Secretary, Confucius Inst. Headquarters, said, "Fudan University has done in-depth research into Chinese culture and its relations with contemporary culture so we think it will be beneficial to the deans to share our insights."
The first Confucius Institute was established in South Korea in 2004. Branches can now be found in more than 110 countries. Classes for primary and secondary schools promoting Chinese culture number more than 500 around the world. The institutes also provide a platform for cultural exchange and materials in learning Chinese and about Chinese culture.
Many believe that Confucius, the renowned philosopher from the 5th century BC, is now the primary symbol of China's ever expanding cultural influence that's embracing the world.
