Police from Shanghai and three other provinces have busted six criminal rings across the country for selling more than 2,600 kilograms of phony sexual enhancement drugs, the Changning District Public Security Bureau announced Tuesday.

In a case in Shanghai, police opened an investigation after discovering a number of brand name sexual enhancement drugs in a suspicious express delivery parcel, according to a police press release.

They sent a sample of the package's contents to the local food and drug administration, which determined that the drugs had not been subject to manufacturing regulations.

Investigators traced the parcel to an adult store on Fengzhuang Road North. The store had already closed down, but its owners had posted a phone number on their door before leaving. An officer called the number and a man working in the ironware shop next door showed up.

The man, surnamed Dong, brought out some samples of similar drugs from his store, so police arrested him. They found several boxes of counterfeit brand drugs in the ironware store.

Police worked with law enforcement officials from Zhejiang, Hubei and Hebei provinces to bust other rings selling sexual enhancement drugs. Officers raided a warehouse in Hubei Province on June 24.

They arrested seven people and confiscated more than 10,000 pills.

Police said that the cases involved more than 30 million yuan ($4.89 million) worth of drugs.
