An investigation team has been set up in response to the indignation among Chinese netizens at a policeman who hurt a baby girl severely, according to the government of Linzhou City in central China's Henan Province.

A couple holding their seven-month-old daughter in arms went for a walk after supper on a late July day and encountered a local policeman surnamed Fan, who grabbed the infant unexpectedly, lifted her over head and hurled her onto the ground, according to a description of the crime that has gone viral on Internet.

The injured baby was immediately sent to Anyang Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and is temporarily out of danger, according to the article.

The policeman received a 15-day detention, but has not been further punished by law, the article said.

The public security and health authorities in Linzhou have sent staff to accompany the baby to go to Beijing for further medical examination, said the local government.
