A man has been detained for 10 days for falsely reporting Friday that someone brought a dangerous item onboard a flight so he could stop his wife from leaving the city, local media reported.

The suspect, surnamed Zhang, called an airport emergency hotline and reported that a passenger on flight CZ8110 from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Chongqing was carrying something dangerous, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News.

The report did not say what kind of dangerous item Zhang claimed the passenger was carrying.

Police quickly determined the report was bogus because the plane slated for the flight to Chongqing had been delayed. It hadn't even arrived in the city yet.

Zhang told police that he called in the false report because he had been quarrelling with his wife and didn't want her to leave the city.

Police slapped him with administrative detention for disrupting public order.
