A tropical depression near Zhejiang Province should help cool Shanghai down this week, local media reported.

The high temperature in Shanghai is expected to drop to 32 C or 33 C Monday, giving the city a break from the recent heat wave, Xinmin Evening News reported. In August alone, the city experienced 17 days when the temperature exceeded 35 C.

Rain began to fall in parts of the city Sunday afternoon due to the tropical depression. The weather will remain cloudy with a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday. The high temperature was 31.9 C Sunday.

It isn't likely Shanghai will have to endure the extremely high temperatures it experienced in July again this summer, though 35 C remains a possibility, said Fu Yi, a press officer with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

In other storm news, a tropical storm off the southeastern coast of Taiwan, called Trami, was upgraded from a tropical depression at 11 am Sunday, Fu told the Global Times.

Weather forecasters could not predict the path of the storm, which was located off the southeastern coast of Taiwan on Sunday.

Forecasters said Trami will spread heavy rain across Taiwan this week, but it is still embedded within the outflow of Typhoon Utor, which makes its path hard to predict, the Laodong Daily reported.
