Police bust kidney-trafficking ring in central China

Police have busted a gang of kidney traffickers and caught more than ten suspects in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, local authorities announced on Monday.

Police in Wuhan were informed in early August that illegal kidney removal and transplant operations were being carried out inside a villa of the city's suburb.

Police caught more than 10 suspects in a raid on Saturday morning in Jiangxia District, according to the Wuhan municipal public security bureau.

Several donors and recipients of kidneys as well as medical workers, who were ready to start an operation, were under police control.

A number of people shared profits from the kidney trafficking.

A recipient had to spend 400,000 yuan (64,840 U.S. dollars) to get a kidney, according to the bureau.

However, the donor only got 30,000 yuan. The doctor who was in charge of the operation got 130,000 yuan. The anesthetist received 30,000 yuan and each nurse got 10,000 yuan.

The rest of the money was shared by informants, who found kidney recipients and donors for the ring, according to the bureau.
