China on Friday said it "resolutely opposes" any use of chemical weapons in Syria, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei.
Asked for China's comments on the alleged possible use of chemical weapons by Syrian government forces near Damascus and if China supports the UN's probe into the incident, Hong said, "China's position is clear. No matter which side in Syria uses chemical weapons, China resolutely opposes it."
Hong said China supports the UN Secretariat to carry out an independent, objective, impartial and professional investigation with regards to the allegation in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
The UN's chemical weapons inspection team has gone to Syria to begin a probe, and China hopes the team will fully consult the Syrian government to ensure the investigation proceeds, Hong said. He added that before the investigation ascertains what really happened, all sides should avoid prejudging the outcome.
"The current situation once again shows the importance and urgency of advancing a political solution for the Syrian issue. China calls on relevant parties to make joint efforts to start the Geneva 2 conference on the Syria issue as soon as possible and launch an inclusive political transitional process," Hong said.
