Roadwork aimed at ameliorating traffic conditions around Tiananmen Square kicked off last Thursday; 488 paving stones are to be replaced, the first such repair work attempted in a decade. The renovation, scheduled for completion before National Day in October, will be carried out between midnight and 5 am to avoid impacting traffic, the Legal Mirror reported.
The paving stones around Tiananmen Square were laid in 1958; damage to the stones over the years has affected the flow of traffic. The most recent renovation attempt to address this problem was carried out in 2002.
