Chinese State Councilor Guo Shengkun has called for all-round efforts to crack down on drug-related crimes while ensuring effective methods to wean users from addiction.
"The crackdown on drugs must be deepened... in order to stem the rampant occurrence of drug-related crimes," said Guo, also the Minister of Public Security, at a meeting on national anti-drug work on Monday.
Guo's comments followed the ministry's Sunday announcement that 2,120 suspects involved in online drug crimes were captured in a special action, which also saw the confiscation of 268 kg of drugs.
In one specific case uncovered by police in east China's Jiangsu Province, a huge number of drug abusers were asked to perform drug-taking in front of a web cam via an online video website.
According to Guo, the anti-drug drive should focus on eliminating the sources of drug crimes while promoting anti-drug awareness among the public.
"We will actively participate in global anti-drug actions and deepen international cooperation in law enforcement," he added.
