London Olympic 400m and 1,500m freestyle champion Sun Yang took a bite of short distance at the National Games as he finished third in the 100m free semifinals here on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who won the 400m, 800m and 1,500m free at the Barcelona World Championships in July, touched in 49.34 seconds. Ning Zetao of Chinese Army was first in 49.09, while Lu Zhiwu of Zhejiang came second in 49.14.
The world fastest time of 100m free was 47.53, creating by James Magnussen of Australia.
"I don't care whether I can win the title," said Sun. "I just want to have a try."
The swimming star, who registered in seven events at the National Games, has already claimed the 200m, 400m free and 4X100m free relay titles.
The 100m free final will take place on Sunday.
