Two officials in South China's Hainan province were punished for violating the regulations to buy moon cakes with public funds, the country's top anti-graft watchdog said on Tuesday.

Fu Shigan, president of Hainan Provincial Health School, and Li Dewen, Party chief of the school, received a warning for buying moon cakes valuing 120,000 yuan ($19,600) with the school's public funds.

They were found of buying 384 packs of moon cakes at 315 yuan each, which is a violation of the provincial government's regulation on excessive spending for festivals, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced on its website.

The moon cakes were bought for the school's staff members, including teachers, for Mid-Autumn Festival, the 15th day of the eighth month in China's lunar calendar, which fell on Sept 19 this year.
