Dairy makers including Dumex, a baby food brand owned by Danone, had bribed doctors and nurses to market baby milk formula in a hospital in Tianjin. Today, authorities in Tianjin released the findings of their investigation.
They say 116 people in Tianjin's 85 health institutions have been taking bribes since 2011. The illicit money will be confiscated, and 13 people will be "severely dealt with". Dumex told CCTV that it will stop such acts immediately, and appoint new senior management to handle the issue.
Newborns in a hospital in Tianjin were fed milk powder instead of breast milk.
The babies' families had no say in the matter. Nearly 70 per cent of the more than 20 million babies born in China each year are fed milk formula, despite medical advice that breast milk is more healthy.
