Acrobats in China are often influenced by traditional Chinese culture. But recently acrobatic shows have been looking for something entirely different.
The diabolo meets the Golden Age of Hollywood. Chinese acrobats perform the diabolo accompanied by music from the Hollywood classic Singin' in the Rain.
This is certainly a refreshing take on acrobatics, but also gives a new perspective on the music from the movie.
This is the first time the company, called the Flag Circus of China, have performed their new show on stage.
Shuai Xi, Director of Flag Circus of China, said, "In the beginning, our entire concept about the diabolo was using it with traditional Chinese shows. But now we are trying to bring in new elements, which is where the idea for 'Singin' in the Rain' came from. We have also tried to use costume to reflect the era."
Singin' in the Rain is well known among Chinese audiences. The director has found that in fact there is a lot of common ground between the movie and Chinese acrobatics.
"The most similar part about this show and the movie is relaxation. We do tricks and performances in a relaxed way." Shuai Said.
Traditional diabolo shows are usually performed by females, primarily as agility is so important. So for the five men in the show, they have found it much more challenging.
These young acrobats will compete against acrobats from 19 other countries in the next few days for the Golden Lion Award at the 14th China Wuqiao International Circus Festival.
