The lifesaving transplant scheduled for 17-year-old Feng Jiong, who is suffering from renal failure, was jeopardized when his mother Lu Miyou abruptly refused to honor her commitment to donate one of her kidneys. After eight hours of persuasion by volunteers, however, she ultimately agreed to proceed with the organ donation, the Beijing News reported.
Feng Jiong has received 550,000 yuan in donations and much public sympathy for his plight. His mother had offered to donate a kidney but came to regret it as she wondered about own health and the possibility of her son's relapse.
Four volunteers who have been caring for the boy spent eight hours persuading Lu to reconsider, promising to help her find a job and insurance. One volunteer said she is still concerned that Lu may still opt out, but Feng said he does not blame his mother for her change of heart, and only wants her there by his side.
