A pedicab driver is now receiving treatment in a Hebei province hospital after law enforcement discovered him on the side of a highway with a length of his intestines hanging out of his belly.
According to reports, Tan Cheng of Taikang county, Henan province was using a glass jar to cover a five to six-centimeter long segment of exposed intestine spilling from his stomach when highway personnel found him and a friend asleep in the back of his three-wheeler on October 26.
Tan told officers he drove his companion to receive follow-up treatment after undergoing abdominal surgery in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang earlier this year, and decided to drive a pedicab to save money.
The two had covered 300 kilometers in two days before running out of gas 125 kilometers away in Xingtai before deciding to have a rest.
Law enforcement approached the vehicle as motorized three-wheelers are forbidden on highways.
However instead of giving them a ride, the officers pulled the tricycle off the highway and filled it with fuel before sending he and his companion on their way.
The report did not specify whether Tan's shocking condition occurred back in Henan or en route to the hospital.
