China's Olympic swimming champion, Sun Yang has been arrested for driving without a license after his Porsche SUV was involved in a crash with a bus, police said. The star was uninjured in the accident on Sunday afternoon in Hangzhou and the 21-year-old's apologized for his behavior.
"I should have been a role model as an athlete and a public figure but I failed in my responsibility," Sun said on social media.
"I am deeply sorry for what I have done and will reflect on my behavior. Because I have been focusing on training and competition, I ignored learning some legal knowledge, which led to my mistake," he wrote on Weibo.
Sun was driving the luxury vehicle which he claimed was borrowed from a relative when a bus hit his car from the behind. Hangzhou police then found the famous swimmer could not provide a driver's license.
And Sun Yang admitted that he did not have one. Sun could face a fine of up to 2,000 yuan, or over three hundred US dollars and the possibility of up to and 15-days detention.
