The Huangpu district government has launched a pilot program that allows local residents to earn cash and prizes for sorting garbage, local media reported Monday.
More than 6,000 families in seven residential communities can participate in the program.
Participants collect their rewards by labeling their bagged and sorted trash with special bar code stickers. When a garbage worker scans one of these stickers, it will credit the account of the resident who sorted the bag. The program will end on May 15.
