The corruption trial of Huang Zhiguang, former Party chief of Shantou, Guangdong province, opened at Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on Monday.
Huang was charged of taking more than 5.5 million yuan ($901,718) in bribes, including 582,000 yuan worth of caterpillar fungus, a highly valued ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine.
Charges also include offering help in project contracting and tendering and in the promotion of officials.
He is also suspected of illegally owning seven guns, reported Yangcheng Evening News.
