Police in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, detained suspects who allegedly took money from a third-party payment platform, Xi'an Evening News reported on Friday.
It was the first case of its type in China.
A company employee, surnamed Yu, contacted police after he received cellphone messages on Oct 10 saying that some 15,000 yuan ($2,460) in his account on a third-party payment platform had been transferred.
After a 12-day investigation, police found that someone had accessed and transferred Yu's money and then took the money from an ATM in Haikou, Hainan province in South China.
Five suspects were detained from Oct 23 to Nov 11.
The suspects allegedly confessed that they had stolen some 200,000 yuan from 59 accounts on the third-party payment platform.
