The Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision has inspected 578 elevators in the city's older residential buildings as of the end of October, eastday.com reported Thursday.
Bureau inspectors have found 117 elevators that need to be replaced, 86 in need of modification and 375 in need of repairs.
The bureau has also finished a first draft of elevator safety standards, which it plans to release in the first half of next year.
