A German expat was stabbed to death by a Chinese man in a restaurant in Pudong New Area Friday evening, according to police.
The suspect, surnamed Wu, from Shandong Province, has been detained by police. Wu told police he believed his victim was having an affair with his wife, according to a statement released on the official microblog of the Pudong New Area Public Security Bureau Friday night.
The victim, 34, whose identity has not been revealed, was dining with the suspect's wife at a branch of the HaiDiLao hotpot restaurant chain on Zhangyang Road. The suspect approached the two with a knife at around 8:30 pm. A Shanghai Television Station (STV) report said the victim and the suspected attacker's wife were from the same company, and were dining with other colleagues. A witness said that the suspect stabbed the victim several times. The victim tried to run away, but collapsed after the suspect allegedly stabbed him in the chest. According to the STV report, there was a 50-meter-long trail of blood left across the restaurant's floor following the attack. Someone claiming to have witnessed the incident said on their microblog that the victim was pursued around the restaurant by the suspect. Other diners tried to flee as the attack took place, the STV report said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to news portal eastday.com.
The suspect stayed at the restaurant after the victim died, and surrendered himself to the police, according to STV. Police are still investigating the case.
