A global positioning system (GPS) has recently been installed on 28 rowboats and 16 lifeboats in the Shichahai scenic area, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
The system is aimed to facilitate the prompt rescue of tourists when accidents take place. The GPS covers 80 percent of the Qianhai, Xihai and Houhai lakes.
According to Sun Lu, the manager of a Shichahai travel agency, the systems will also be installed in 184 pedal boats and battery-operated boats next year. "If there are drunk tourists or fights occur, the GPS can help the rescue team find the ships in time and solve the problems," she said.
