China's so-called "nouveau riche" have recently come under the public spotlight. While their sometimes gawdy displays of wealth have been subject to contempt and sneers, some members of this burgeoning class are trying to use their newly acquired fortunes to make a positive impact.
This is 32-year-old Li Fu, a young entrepreneur whose company has become one of China's leaders in video production.
Though he's risen to achieve great success, it was anything but easy at the beginning.
"I was poor back in the old days. I was only able to afford finishing high school thanks to donations from my classmates and teachers. But after working hard for the first five years, I established my own company. I started with 7 people, and now it has more than seven hundred staff working for six branches nationwide." Li said.
But even after building his empire from scratch, Li wanted to do more.
Noticing the huge talent gap in China's video production industry, Li decided to set-up a training program at his company that could help other young, aspiring producers get a foothold in the industry -- something that was lacking when he was starting out.
And that's not the only way Li is using his new wealth to create new opportunities.
As a long-time fan of sports cars, Li not only owns his dream Ferrari, he also has his own club. And with some 15-hundred members nationwide, it is the largest sports car club in the country. But speed isn't their only passion.
"Originally we just wanted to share the sports car culture in China, to pass on the driving spirit. But as the number of people joining our club grew, and most of those people being young and successful, we started to realize that we could use this as a platform to play a bigger role in society." Li said.
The club's latest charity project is building a school in the southwestern city of Ya'an, which was devastated by an earthquake earlier in the year. Li says that despite all the labels and criticism he and the other newly-wealthy Chinese in his club face, they will continue looking for ways to give back to society.
