Passenger record broken

A record 8.89 million passengers traveled Shanghai's metro lines Tuesday, as residents flocked to sales and shows for New Year's Eve.

The figure surpassed the metro system's previous record for daily passenger flow of 8.67 million, which was set the day before last year's Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Metro Line 2 carried 1.63 million passengers, the most of any line, followed by 1.34 million on Line 1 and 920,000 on Line 8.
