South China's island province of Hainan will fight against "uncivilized behaviors," the province's Party chief warned at a meeting held on Sunday, after foreign men swam naked in the resort city of Sanya.

Luo Baoming criticized these actions, which recently took place on the beaches of the resort city, and said the behavior goes against Chinese culture. When photos of the men swimming naked were published online, "there were more than 170,000 clicks on one website in half a day," he said.

The province will not allow this kind of behavior to happen again, said Luo, adding that Sanya authorities should persuade people not to do these things or leave the site, and those who refuse should be detained.

Sanya authorities have begun taking action. From February 5, authorities began to tell visitors not to be naked in public, and arranged for police to supervise resort sites.

Sanya received 707,400 tourist arrivals during this year's Spring Festival holiday, a 25 percent increase compared with last year, according to statistics released by the Sanya Tourism Commission.
