A 20-year-old man climbed the fence to jump into the enclosure of a Bengal white tiger at a zoo in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, on Sunday morning.
After provoking the tiger with exaggerated movements, he daubed red ink on the glass window of the cage.
The man was rescued without injury and the police took him away.
"If it had been a Siberian tiger, the consequences would have been unimaginable," a member of the zoo staff told the West China City Daily newspaper.
"It's a pity the tiger didn't eat the man!"joked Net user Chen_Peng.
Another Net user wrote, "Maybe he wanted to be the famous tiger fighter Wu Song?"
"The tiger probably thought 'What a stupid guy. I don't want to have anything to do with you,'" Shayuer wrote.
Some wanted to visit the zoo where the scene took place.
Others suggested that if the tiger hadn't eaten for two days, the story might not have had such a happy ending.
