Police in Qingfeng county, Henan province, have confirmed the sister-in-law of a 7-year-old girl is suspected of pushing the girl into a well and killing her, Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.
The sister-in-law, 23, who is surnamed Dou, admitted to the police that she pushed the girl into the well after picking her up on her way to school and tricking her to get near the well before pushing her into it on the morning of Dec 24.
The girl's body was not found until Feb 15, after which the police identified Dou as a suspect and detained her.
Dou said she held a grudge against the girl, who was the adopted daughter of her parents-in-law, as she could potentially challenge her inheritance, the report said.
The case is still under investigation.
