The driver of a cement mixer died early Monday after he lost control of the vehicle while driving down an offramp from the Yangpu Bridge in Pudong New Area, local media reported.
The driver, who was not identified, was found dead at the scene of the crash, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News.
The cement mixer was taking a curve on an offramp from Luoshan Road around 4:40 am when it crashed through a guardrail and fell four meters to the street, the report said. The vehicle was mangled in the crash, but its mixing drum remained intact. No cement leaked onto the road.
The cement mixer's windshield was shattered and both of its front tires were knocked loose in the crash. The tires were found more than 10 meters away.
Emergency personnel spread sand on the street to soak up the fuel and other fluid that had gushed from the damaged vehicle, allowing other cars to pass safely through the area, the report said.
No other vehicles were damaged in the crash because there were few cars on the road that early in the morning.
Traffic police had to cut the cement mixer apart to remove it from the scene, the report said. The street was cleared by 9:10 am.
Police were still investigating the crash Monday evening, but suspect the driver might have been driving too fast down the offramp.
