An unmarried 25-year-old local woman gave birth Monday afternoon in a public restroom on Kaixuan Road in Changning district, local media reported.
The restroom's attendant called police after a visitor noticed blood coming out of a stall that had been occupied for a long time.
When the attendant inquired if the woman inside needed help, she repeatedly said that everything was fine.
Police found the woman and a newborn baby boy inside the stall, according to a report on the news website xinmin.cn.
Police sent the woman to a hospital where doctors cut the baby's umbilical cord, Shanghai Television Station reported.
The woman's condition stabilized Monday, but the baby was suffering from low body temperature.
The new mother didn't answer questions, but asked police not to tell her parents.
The woman said she worked hourly jobs after graduating from a vocational school. She did not identify the baby's father.
