A pair of wild dogs that had terrorized a sleepy village in northern Jilin province for days and mauled dozens of chickens and ducks was finally caught on Wednesday.

Zhangjia village resident Li Yunfu trapped the duo in his yard early on Wednesday, ending a one-hour frenzy in which the dogs killed 57 of his chickens and two geese.

The dogs, previously thought to be wolves by residents, were identified as Siberian Huskies. Local police were called to impound the dogs. Li reported thousands of yuan in losses.

Locals explained the canines had been stalking livestock in the village for days. Zhao Aimin, 55, reported seeing two "wolf-like" animals attacking his ducks March 1.

"In such cases where there is no owner to take responsibility for the dog, the victim must bear the losses," said Zhang Rihui, a lawyer with Mingdaweiye Law Office.

Tang Jingwen, deputy general secretary of Wild Animal Protection Association in Jilin, said the Siberian husky is related to the wolf and is prone to exhibit wild behavior.
