A 25-year-old woman surnamed Yi was sentenced to three years in jail for attempted extortion of her adoptive father in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, New Express Daily reported.
Yi, a girl from a poor village in Hubei province, was adopted by an elderly villager who was doing business in Guangzhou in November 2004, when she was 15 years old.
Yi's adoptive father paid Yi's living expenses and tuition for the past decade and arranged for Yi to work in his company when she grew older.
But Yi asked her adoptive father, who is now president of a listing company, to give her as much as 4 million yuan ($651,590) after she was not satisfied with her job in the company.
She also frequently arrived at her adoptive father's company to stir up trouble and constantly sent him abusive and threatening text messages from April 2012 to July 2013, when her request for money was refused by her adoptive father.
Yi also spread the rumor she had been her adoptive father's lover since 2004.
Yi was detained in August 2013 when her adoptive father sought police help.
Guangzhou Huangpu District People's Court said Yi had tried to commit racketeering.
