The young generation of migrant workers in Shanghai care about their appearance and spend a high proportion of their income on their looks, Laodong Daily reported.
A survey conducted by the National Statistics Bureau's Shanghai branch polled 1,215 migrant families in Shanghai's 17 districts. Those polled have been in the city for an average of eight years, with an average age of 32.
According to the report, the average annual income of respondents was about 30,000 yuan ($4,885), and average annual living costs were 16,097 yuan per person.
Those polled said they spend 1,403 yuan, or 8.7 percent of their total living cost on clothes, 1.5 percent higher than their urban counterparts.
The average age of migrant workers is very young, with most in their 20s and 30s. Following fashion and paying attention to their appearance is a main characteristic, the report said.
In addition, for every 100 migrant families, 45 owned smartphones and four possessed tablet computers, according to the report.
