Four hutong around Nanluoguxiang in Dongcheng district will be renovated in the next three to four years; overcrowded residents will be evacuated, surrounding facilities will be improved, and the most efficient way to protect cultural relics will be determined, the Beijing Daily reported.
In the targeted area, which includes Fuxiang Hutong, Suoyi Hutong, Yuer Hutong and Maoer Hutong, some alleys are too narrow for two people to walk through at the same time. Yang Liuyin, the secretary of the Dongcheng district committee, said recently that the Yuhe area had been renovated in October of 2011, but adjacent areas are still in poor condition.
