TB screening for new college students

According to the Beijing Institute for Tuberculosis Control, tuberculosis (TB) screening has been added to the physical exam for new college students, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

Every year, 80 percent of the 170,000 new students who attend universities in Beijing are from other cities. A large portion come from areas where TB outbreaks are common. In 2013, 513 students were found to have TB.

According to the data of the health department, 550 million people suffer from TB in China; every year, there are about one million more infections. In 2013, Beijing had 3,856 registered TB patients, and six clusters of cases.
