China wins first title at Fencing Junior Worlds

Chinese athlete Chen Haiwei on Wednesday evening won the first gold medal for his country at the World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships in Plovdiv of Bulgaria.

On the road to the glory at junior men's foil competition, Chen beat Alastair Keyes of Canada 15-7, Bogdan Dolzhenko of Ukraine 15- 6, Guillermo Delbergue of Spain 15-5, Baptiste Mourrain of France 15-13, Alexander Massialas of the United States 15-9, to reach the final where he smashed Alexander Choupenitch of Czech Republic 15- 6.

More than 1,300 fencers from 104 countries and regions, including 25 athletes from China, are competing in the Championship that will end on Saturday.

Russia won three of the 12 gold medals, followed by Hungary and Italy with two gold medals each, and China, United States, Japan, Estonia, and Poland with one gold each.

In August, the best athletes in Plovdiv, will participate in the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
