A funeral for a Beijing woman eventually led to assault after a man in attendance informed her husband and son of their affair, China News Service reported on Saturday.
The widower and his son, surnamed Zhang, were each handed one-year prison sentences with one year reprieve for assault and battery after the two beat the man senseless following the woman's funeral in January.
Trouble began after the man, surnamed Lu, approached the son during the ceremony and said that he could count on him for help because he once had an affair with his mother.
Zhang's father soon found proof of the relationship in his deceased wife's cell phone records.
The father and son then plotted later to lure Lu to a remote part of the city and beat him unconscious. Lu suffered from a concussion, several fractures and a pulmonary infection from the beating.
The two sides reached a compensation agreement, and reprieve sentences were dealt due to the unusual circumstances, said the court.
