The one-month long 21st Beijing College Student Film Festival lowered its curtain Saturday night with a starlit closing ceremony in Beijing's Olympic Sports Center. Altogether 19 awards were announced that night, including the special Students' Choice Award for Favorite Actor, Actress and Director.
Einstein and Einstein, directed by Cao Baoping, took the Best Film award. Beating more well-known competitors like Finding Mr Right, Unbeatable, and Black Coal, Thin Ice, Einstein and Einstein became the night's biggest dark horse.
Not shown in commercial theaters, Einstein and Einstein talks about the difficulties a teenager girl suffers trying to fit into her father's new family.
Presenting the award, director Feng Xiaogang highly praised the film and its director, explaining how some scenes shocked him and that he felt Cao had done an incredible job.
The three other front-runners, however, did not go home empty handed. Golden Bear winner Black Coal, Thin Ice won Diao Yinan Best Director, while Nick Cheung (Unbeatable) and Tang Wei (Finding Mr Right) received Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.
Director Guan Hu, who won Favorite Director last year with Design of Death continued to hold onto the title this year, thanks to his new work The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel. Historical action film Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon, a film by Hong Kong director Tsui Hark, not only brought actor Feng Shaofeng a Favorite Actor award, but also won an award for visual effects.
Two actresses won the Favorite Actress award this year - Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-mei and mainland actress Yang Ying.
