Two JuneYao Airlines flights from Shanghai to Urumqi had to be diverted to different airports Thursday, the airline announced on its microblog.
The crew of flight HO1255 from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Urumqi reported at noon that a passenger passed them a note that said his or her companion could not make the flight and had threatened to "blow up" the plane.
The passenger said he was worried that a piece of luggage on the plane, which he or she kept for his companion, may contain something suspicious, the airline said. The flight made an urgent landing in Lanzhou at 1:29 pm. At the same time, the passenger's companion took JuneYao Airlines flight HO1229 from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Urumqi, the airline said.
To ensure the safety of passengers on the flight, JuneYao Airlines diverted the airplane to Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, where it landed at 2:22 pm.
The airline said the passenger's companion missed flight HO1255 because he or she was "shopping at the airport."
No one was injured on either flight, according to the airline's post. Three passengers are under investigation Thursday for fabricating false information, the Shanghai municipal government said on its microblog.
