There's more to live drama in China than the super stages in the super-sized cities. Renowned Taiwan playwright and theatre director, Stan Lai, long hailed as one of Asia's best, has drawn critical acclaim and had commercial success in mega cities like Beijing and Shanghai. This year, however, he's presenting his works in cities that don't often get to see such quality theatre.
The cast and crew involved in presenting Stan Lai's plays, including the the Chekove-inspired "I Take Your Hand in Mine" and "Seagull," have been pleasantly surprised by the reception they've received, especially in smaller markets.
"The box-office of the second tier even third tier markets are performing even better than Beijing and Shanghai. That means people's demand for quality productions are really increasing," said Wang Keran, producer.
In Nanjing, the house was 90 percent sold out. But Lai says the numbers are not what really matters.
"I think audiences are gradually realizing that drama is a kind of art, which can bring them much more than just entertainment. That's what makes this tour really rewarding," said Stan Lai.
Stan Lai's plays will travel to 12 cities before the tour ends.
