A 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death by his aunt's ex-husband Wednesday morning in Changning district.
The suspect, surnamed Zhu, 58, from Shanghai, was arrested for stabbing the boy and wounding his father with a switchblade around 7:35 am in their neighborhood on Changning Road. The boy died at the scene. His father, surnamed Liu, was rushed to a local hospital.
Police said Zhu attacked the boy and his father over a family dispute, but did not provide other details, according to a press release from the Changning District Public Security Bureau. Zhu had been married to Liu's sister.
Two security guards who witnessed the murder said that the suspect took the time to wipe off the 5- to 10-centimeter blade with a piece of newspaper after the attack, the local news portal xinmin.cn reported. He then wandered around the neighborhood.
Liu was taking his son to school on a scooter when the suspect stopped them, the report said. The suspect stabbed the boy before slashing his father.
Witnesses said that the suspect did not leave the neighborhood until police arrived, according to the report. When officers approached, the suspect handed them the knife without a struggle.
A member of the local neighborhood committee told the Global Times that the victim's family had been living in the compound for several years, but the suspect did not reside there.
The family had never complained about disputes with their relatives and got along well with their neighbors, the committee member said.
Police have opened an investigation into the case.
