Wife stands in for hit-and-run husband

A couple in Chongqing has been detained after the husband was in a fatal traffic accident for which the wife claimed responsibility, Chongqing Evening News reported on Thursday.

At 8:37 pm on May 18, a black car fled after it hit an old man who was crossing a road in the city's Changshou district. The elderly pedestrian died in hospital after emergency treatment.

Later that night, a woman surnamed Yang went to traffic police and confessed to being in the accident but, after investigation, police found she was not the driver. On May 21, the husband, surnamed Guo, went to traffic police and said his wife claimed responsibility for the accident because she thought he was the economic pillar of the family.

The couple was detained and Yang was bailed on May 27.

The case is still under investigation.
