Urban management department in the Hanyang district of Wuhan, Hubei province, recently adopted a new punishment that requires pedestrians caught walking through red lights to stand on duty as supervisors until they catch another jaywalker to take over the duty.
The new measure has been piloted at some major intersections in Hanyang district since the end of May. According to statistics from the local urban management department, the number of jaywalkers has reduced by half within the first week of its implementation.
The new measure was taken to make pedestrians better obey traffic rules and regulations instead of the previous fine punishment. City inspectors will keep guard at these intersections to ensure the new measure is enforced smoothly.
A pedestrain surnamed Yan in Hanyang disctrict said he is now very careful since he was caught. Yan said he stood on duty for nearly 10 minutes until he spotted another jaywalker to replace him.
