Five people have been sentenced to up to three years and six months of imprisonment for participating and promoting heretic religious sects in Xixian county, Henan province, local media reported on Wednesday.

Four of them made up publicity materials to recruit members online for the Church of Almighty God, a heretic religious sect. The other one was caught when spreading leaflets from the cult in a residential area. China has kicked off campaign on cracking down the heretic religious sects following a brutal murder of a woman at a fast food restaurant by members of the cult in Shandong Province.
