Beijing's top 5 sites for heritage architecture
1. The Church of the Saviour, Xishiku Beidajie, Dongcheng district. Also known as the "north church," it features Gothic architecture and was originally built in 1703.
2. Beijing Legation Quarter, Dongjiaomin Xiang, Dongcheng district. The area served as the embassy region from 1861 to 1959.
3. Xiheyan, south of Qianmen Dajie in Dongcheng district. The old financial center, home to early banks and chambers of commerce.
4. Duan Qirui's government office, Tieshizi Hutong, Dongcheng district. Featuring Gothic architecture, the building was the headquarters of Duan, who served as premier of the Republic of China from June 1916 to May 1917.
5. Peking American School, No. 203 Chaoyangmennei Dajie. A building with eight Vincenzo Scamozzi pillars, the school was built in 1918 for American children. Today it is the dorm of employees at the Ministry of Culture.
