A senior official with the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Tuesday told officials to avoid formalism in self-criticism sessions as part of a CPC campaign to fight decadence.

Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, asked CPC officials to improve their work style and pay attention to the public's main concerns.

Criticism and self-criticism at intra-Party sessions, or democratic meetings, are part of the CPC's "mass line" campaign that is dedicated to removing undesirable work styles from officialdom and forging closer Party-people ties.

Efforts should be made to improve democratic management at the grassroots level, ensuring legal exercise of rights and protection of public interests, Liu said.

Launched in June 2013, the campaign has now entered its second phase, which is scheduled to run from January to September and to target more lower-level departments and leaderships. The first phase focused on central and provincial-level departments.

"If the campaign is regarded as a mere formality and carried out superficially, the Party will lose the people's trust," Liu said, urging officials to be committed to solving practical problems for the masses.
