China pours flood relief funds into Chongqing

The ministries of finance and civilaffairs have allocated 50 million yuan ($8 million) asrelief funds for southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

Multiple rounds of heavy rain and ensuing floods battered theregion last month, killing at least 12 people, according to Xinhuatallies based on reports from the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The fund will be mainly used for resettlement and basic livingaid for disaster-affected people, repairing and rebuilding housesand compensation for relatives of those killed in the disaster,said a ministry statement released on Tuesday.

Previously, the municipal government earmarked 8 million yuanfor local relief while sending 800 tents, 4,000 cotton quilts and3,000 folding beds for people in disaster-hit areas.
