More than 1 million people had endorsed a signature movement to oppose "Occupy Central" in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) as of Friday evening, the movement's organizer announced, saying that it successfully outnumbered 800,000 they had expected.

In the past two weeks, members of the public, dubbed as the " silent majority," came to petition stations across Hong Kong to voice their strong wish for the universal suffrage of the HKSAR chief executive in 2017 and opposition against the proposal of Occupy Central.

The organizer, Alliance for Peace and Democracy, said they had collected a total of 1,028,925 written forms in which the signers agree to oppose violence and occupying the Central, support peace and democracy for Hong Kong.

The alliance said it will launch a similar signature movement on the Internet from Aug. 2 to 17 which is designed for those citizens who support the campaign but failed to sign the written form.

The signature campaign started on July 19 when the organizer united more than 1,100 social groups in Hong Kong to mobilize public support for counter against another movement which threatens to occupy the Central, Hong Kong's financial hub, if the universal suffrage package for the SAR's next chief executive does not meet "international standards."
