Some of the city's public bike rental systems have become ineffective and out of use, the Beijing News reported.
Starting from 2012, the government has been promoting "green transportation" by offering bikes for rent at various areas in the city. However, the report found that bike rental systems in Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang and Fengtai districts were broken and lacking in maintenance.
For example, when a resident surnamed Zhou tried to return her bike, the system failed to process her smart card. Many bikes are in disrepair with missing bells and askew seats, making them difficult to ride.
