News reports that went viral on the Internet claiming homemade wine can cause methylismus has some DIY wine makers fearing for their health. However, experts argue that this is not necessarily so, the Beijing News reported.

According to the news, a Hunan citizen suffered from a fast heart beat and blurred eyesight after drinking homemade wine. The diagnosis stated that homemade wines often contain more methanol than is required, so food poisoning is common among its drinkers.

Despite the reports, experts explain that only a small amount of methanol will be decomposed if mixed correctly. One error to avoid is adding water or wine when brewing, the other is keeping wine in plastic bottles.
