Military save 460 lives in SW China quake

Over 11,000 Chinese armed forces, armed police and militia staff took part in the earthquake relief in southwest China's Yunnan Province, saving 460 people, military said Friday.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, the Chengdu Military Area Command (CMAC) said staff are still working in 39 villages in nine townships.

Sunday's quake killed 617 people and injured over 3,000. More than 110 people are still missing.

The CMAC has established four field hospitals and deployed 19 medical teams and four disease-prevention groups, treating over 10,000 people.

The military has repaired over 170 km of roads, and set up water and laundry services, transported 2,009 tons of food, erected almost 7,000 tents. They have set up seven hot food stations that each can provide 7,000 meals each day.

Soldiers are still searching for survivors.

The CMAC has also donated 20 million yuan (3.25 million U.S. dollars) to rebuild schools and daily necessities worth 2.27 million yuan.
